Routing Protocols

While configuring the router on your own, you have to choose what types of routing protocol you have to install and configure.

RIP version-1: It is a dynamic protocol and automatically figures routing tables on its own, thus manual inputs are not required.

Encryption Standards

This feature configures the virtual private network, encryption hardware advanced integration modules and the network modules.

Data Encryption Standard - applies 56-bit key to 64-bit block of data. This is the most commonly used encryption standard. A single key is used which is very difficult to break.

Triple DES (3DES) - applies 3 keys in succession making it more difficult to break the code.

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) will be the next encryption standard for commercial transactions in the private sector.

Modulation

There are many standards of modulation. The most commonly used types are:

QAM: Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, a dominant modulation technique for high speed digital signals.

CCK: Complimentary Code Keying is a modulation scheme to operate in data speeds up to 11Mbps in the RF band.

OFDM: Orthogonal Frequency division multiplexing modulation is used for even higher speeds of 54Mbps.

DSSS: Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum use wideband signals that are not easy to detect and resists jamming attempts.
Security

Today no home and office network is secure. To counter the hacking efforts of hackers, look for good built-in security functionalities. These will ensure that your system doesn t slow down, those within the range of your wireless are not able to view your files, emails, instant messages, usernames and passwords. Depending on the security features you can also block spams, illegal activities with your internet connection and prevent loading of dangerous software.

This however doesn t mean your network is completely secure.

Some steps that can be taken are:

Enable WEP, wired equivalent privacy encryption provides security to WLANS. The WEP keys encrypt the data stream.

Turning on WPA encryption. The Wi-Fi protected access adds on the authentication and encryption features WEP explained above.

TKIP, Temporal Key Integrity Protocol covers up for the encryption weaknesses of WEP.
WPA2 protection is the latest one and provides high level of protection.
Enable wireless MAC Address filtering.

WEP Encryption length

The WEP encryption is based on a combination of secret user keys and system generated values. The key encrypts and de-encrypts the data that is transferred between the access points and the clients. There are two versions:
The earlier version supported 40-bit encryption the key length was 40 bits and 24 additional bits of system generated data, thus a total of 64 bits.
Easy decoding of 40 bit WEP encryption encouraged vendors to go in for 128-bit encryption. 128-bit encryption has a key length of 104 bits.

Antenna Type

The omni directional antenna of routers broadcast 360degrees around the router. Position them in such a way that you can make the most of the radiating signals.

External antennas can add strength significantly, thus giving a wider range and increased network performance when compared with the performance of in-built antennas.

Detachable antennas disable 802.11a lower band communications when detached. On attaching the antenna the lower band is enabled. Thus they can be screwed into the device and can be upgraded easily.

The third type is the internal integrated antennas. These antennas are built-in, and hence cannot be changed or directed.

Brand Name

Wireless routers are still evolving, and at this infant stage it will do good to stick to one brand. Switching between brands can lead to compatibility problems. Linksys and Netgear wireless routers are among the few companies that have the highest wireless router ratings a company can get.

The most obvious source of competition comes in the form of all of the services that are offering movies in HDTV format for download over the Internet. For example, Sony s Bravia HDTV sets can display a variety of HDTV videos that can be downloaded from the Internet. Another service that provides HDTV programming is Vudu. Vudu is basically a set top box that can be used to download movies from the Internet and display them in high definition on an HDTV set. The only catch with Vudu is that the device downloads the movies in standard definition format and then upconverts them to HDTV format before displaying them on the screen. This system has the advantage of conserving bandwidth for easier and faster downloads, but doesn t provide the same level of picture quality as a true HDTV download would. Still, the concept of upconverting standard def video to HDTV is sound and may be able to produce better results with the technological advances of the future.

The Sony Play Station 3 is not only a Blu-ray disc player, but is also expected to be capable of downloading high def movies from the Internet in the near future, making another alternative to High Def DVD s. The Xbox 360 from Microsoft is already capable of downloading HDTV movies from the Internet, but the device is plagued by depressingly long download times- sometimes on the order of eight hours for a standard length movie! Still, these two devices make it obvious that both Sony and Microsoft (which is a backer of HD-DVD) are hedging their bets by embracing the same technology that could make their investments in High Def DVD technology a loss.

One interesting option that has been proposed for getting HDTV content in the future is providing it for consumers on compact, portable hard drives. These hard drives would be enormous in capacity and contain entire archives of movies. Instead of paying for all of these movies all at once, consumers would be able to see what s available to watch on the hard drive and then pay to have the movie that they want to watch unlocked. That way having instant access to a huge number of HDTV titles could be extremely cost effective. Of course, the disadvantage of this is that it would be difficult to add new titles to the hard drive, but maybe that s where Internet downloads could come in- to supplement a larger personal archive, rather than to provide the viewer with everything that she or he may want to watch.

Regardless of how exactly the future will play out, it s obvious that HDTV DVD technology has a lot more competition than most people acknowledge.

Thinking back, I wished that these public records would have been accessible during the late 70s and 80s. New Call Card Fraud Allegations Begin To Surface

At present, new revelations, and allegations of fraudulent call card marketing are being heard from an unlikely source, which are some of the largest telecom firms selling the cards. Confirming suspicions long held by users, these card providers are accusing each other in federal court litigation in the state of New Jersey, of methodically shortchanging unwitting clients.

The prepaid call card sector over the years has become a $4 billion industry whose customers are mostly poor immigrants, older people, and other low-income individuals who are unable to afford conventional phone services or lack the documentation needed to sign up with a standard service. A lot of prominent retailers like Wal-Mart Stores and Walgreens sell these prepaid cards under their own brands, however these are generally proven to provide the service they advertise and aren t involved in the current controversy.

Consumer Concerns With Excessive Fess

Some prepaid call card service providers also impose an array of “fees” on card users that sometimes reduce the value of the cards, by cutting 10, 20, or more minutes. Often called connection, service, or maintenance fees, these extra charges are sometimes disclosed in not-too-clear fine print on the back of cards, however at other times is not disclosed at all.

In a 2005 study done by associate professor Julia Marlowe of Housing and Consumer Economics at the University of Georgia, on telecom firm IDT and its $3 Crazy Crazy Crazy phone card, it was revealed that the call card charges a connection fee at the end of the call for every five minutes of use.

The card levies a 25% service fee, even though it s not clear from the fine print on the card where the 25% fee applies. The card company however says that the fees are fair and vary by destination, and a customer can avoid them by using all of a card s minutes for one conversation, IDT adds.

How Tight Are Regulations On Phone Cards These Days?

As compared to other industries, the regulation of the prepaid phone card market has been relatively light. Only 11 states, including California, Connecticut, Florida, and Illinois, have specific laws on call cards, and other states simply rely on generic consumer protection ordinances and laws, which are rarely applied to these types of devices.

The Federal Communications Commission has the authority but hasn t used it that much, however insider sources from the FCC note that they are starting to tighten their reins on unscrupulous card providers, and will soon be suggesting stiffer enforcement of telecommunications regulations.
